The Hopi Reservation of Arizona is completely surrounded by Navajo lands and is home to about 11,000 people. Principle settlements include Old Oraibi, Second Mesa, Walpi, Polacca and Keams Canyon, named after one of the west’s pioneering white traders. The Hopi are believed to be descended directly from the Hisatsinom (Anasazi and San Juan Basketmakers) and are thought to have lived in the region since about 500 AD. Hopi ways and traditions are distinctly different from those of the Navajo or New Mexico pueblo peoples. Hopis call themselves Hopitu - “The People of Peace”
