Navajo Tribe
Gerald A. Pinto was born in 1970 and has been etching and painting pottery since 1987. He is a member of the Navajo-Dine' Tribe of North Western New Mexico. He was raised in Vanerwagon, NM which is South of Gallup and is the youngest of 7 siblings. Gerald has always been immersed in art & culture. Having older siblings who are silversmith's and a mother who weaved gave him insight into creativity & design. Dennis Charley, a cousin from his mother's side introduced the art of Carved Navajo Red-ware to the family in the mid 1980's. He uses cedar wood for his firings and local slips from the Vanderwagon area. This along with the slow cool down gives the pots the darker tones. The polishing is done with a burnished piece of amber and the pots are finished with a very light pine pitch & mineral oil glaze. He uses Kingman Turquoise for his inlays. He currently has 3 series, "Elemental", "DV8" (carved & reverse stain) and "Equinox" (Glazed Antique Crackle).
